Huge apartment block planned at empty cinema auditorium opposite Nottingham Railway Station

The multi-million-pound transformation of the south side of the city centre could be boosted further if plans to build a multi-storey apartment block at a derelict cinema auditorium site are approved.

Developers want to demolish a disused and empty cinema auditorium, in Queen's Road, to facilitate a large accommodation block featuring 39 apartments. The exact location of the site sits opposite Nottingham Railway Station, across from the BeerHeadz micropub.

The development is planned to include one and two-bedroom apartments.

The vast project is expected to be split into two elements with a six-storey building and a nine-storey block built near the tram lines.

A concierge office is planned at ground floor level along with two retail units. Seven car parking spaces are expected to serve the site.

The plans have been submitted to the city council for approval.

Scott Beighton, 40, of Ripley, who works in the legal profession, said: "It (the current building) looks atrocious.

"If they want to develop it it's obviously somewhere that can be built on.

"It looks like a brownfield ground. Why not?

"It makes sense. It's space that is already there - rather than creating new space and cutting down trees."

Cherry Cooke, 23, of Queen's Road, who works in HR for Experian, said workers needed to live close to local businesses.

"Businesses like Experian, Capital One and Boots, they are employing a lot of graduates. Apartments are perfect," she said.

"No one wants to move straight into a house."

Khairul Khashen, 33, of Long Eaton, who works for Nottingham City Council, backed the plans.

"I am sure it would look a lot better that what that building looks like at the moment," he said.

However, a 50-year-old woman of Derby Road, in Stapleford, who works as a sales assistant in a card shop but asked not to be named, said she didn't want to see apartments built.

"It should be made into something like a cinema or a bar or something," she said.

"We are outside the train station. It should be more than what it is."

If the proposals are given the green light, the development would add to the regeneration of the south side of Nottingham city centre including the long-awaited plans to redevelop the Broadmarsh car park and bus station.

The applicant listed in the planning documents was Mr Footitt, of I H Moore and Company (Holdings) Ltd, and the planning agent as Emily King, of Core Architects.
