'Huge amount of police' in Avonmouth as five men discovered in lorry

Five men were discovered at the back of a HGV after a lorry driver heard noises in his vehicle in Avonmouth.

Police, specialist paramedics and officers from Border Force were called to Poplar Way East at around 11am on Sunday (March 7).

They found a group of men, who said they were Iraqi and Iranian nationals.

A witness told Bristol Live that they saw a 'huge amount of police cars and ambulances' at the scene on Sunday.

They said: "Looks like they had found people in the back."

A South Western Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called on Sunday at 11.21am about an incident on Poplar Way East, Avonmouth.

"We sent various resources to respond to the incident, including specialist paramedics.

"We assessed and discharged five patients at the scene.”

The men's cases will be dealt with according to the immigration rules, a Border Force spokesperson confirmed.
