Huge 999 response to Clifton Observatory after fears person faced difficulty on rocks

Emergency services were called to Clifton Observatory today after reports a person had got into difficulty on the rocks.

A member of the public called Avon Fire and Rescue to report someone appeared to be stuck on the rock face near the Observatory and Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Police, fire service and the ambulance service all attended the incident which took place just before 11 am today (Tuesday, April 6).

After a search, no one was found and the fire service report they received another call saying the person had climbed back up the cliff themselves.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "Police and the ambulance service attended a concern for welfare call at about 10.45am this morning.

The spokesman continued: "There were fears someone had got themselves into difficulties on the rocks.

"However, despite a search, no one was found and it’s believed to have been a call with good intent."

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue said: "We were called at 10.47am to assist in a rope rescue after a member of the public reported seeing someone on the rock face.

"Our units deployed. We then received another call saying the person had appeared to self rescue themselves and had gone back up the rock face.

"Our logs show the incident was over by 11.15am."
