Huge £78m project that could transform County Durham's leisure centres

A consultation on the first stage of a £78m leisure transformation programme is to close later this week.

People are invited to have their say on the programme, which will include three new leisure centres along with improvements and activities.

Durham County Council is asking for views on stage one of the scheme covering Abbey, Peterlee, Spennymoor and Teesdale.

The plans include new interactive adventure, climb and play facilities, wellbeing suites, ten pin bowling and a sauna and steam room.

Improvements are proposed to gyms, exercise studios, swimming, sport hall, water play and changing facilities.

Teesdale’s squash courts are to be replaced with a wellbeing suite and Peterlee’s altered to accommodate a gym, and Spennymoor’s library will be moved to the leisure centre under the plans.

The consultation is live until 5pm on Friday. Anyone interested in contributing can click here for more information.

Consultation on further phases in the programme will be held from spring next year.

There will be specific consultation on leisure centres in Chester-le-Street, Seaham and Woodhouse Close.
