Huge 70ft tree falls onto Cardiff house during Storm Eunice

A huge tree estimated to be at least 70ft tall fell onto a house in Cardiff during Storm Eunice.

The incident happened around 11.30am on Friday, February 18, in Rhiwbina.

No-one was injured, according to a local resident who lives on the street, but the roof, window and gate of the house were damaged by the blow. It came as Cardiff was under a rare Met Office red weather warning as Storm Eunice hammers Wales. You can follow live updates here.

The resident, who did not want to be named, added that the elderly resident of the house on Lon-Y-Rhyd had not noticed what had happened until neighbours checked in on her.

"We were all inside having breakfast, and all of a sudden we heard this huge, huge 'thud'," recalled the 22-year-old.

"We saw it out of the window and all the neighbours came out of their houses, because the person in the house which it fell onto is an 80-year-old lady. Luckily she wasn't injured.

"We all went outside. There were about twenty people outside looking at it.

"It was a huge tree. The trunk alone must have been at least over half a metre in width and a minimum of 70 feet high.

"It had completely fallen on top of the house and then rolled off. There is damage to the roof, and the window is damaged as well. Her gate has completely folded in and it's stainless steel."

He added that the elderly woman who lives in the house was at first oblivious to what had happened.

"She's hard of hearing so she hadn't noticed. We had to go in and check on her," he said.

Asked if he would have expected the tree to fall now ahead of the warnings about Storm Eunice, he said: "Absolutely not. Not a chance. I've grown up and lived here for 22 years and this tree has always been there. We've had storms before. It's huge - it wasn't even rotten. So it was the wind."

The resident expressed his concern for other similar incidents as there are many big trees in the area.

"There's another tree of the exact same size at the end of the street, so it is very worrying," he said.

The fallen tree comes as Storm Eunice hit Wales on Friday after the Met Office issued a rare red weather warning for swathes of the country.

Winds of up to 100mph and flood warnings are in place across Wales for the storm, and it is set to be one of the "most impactful storms to affect southern and central parts of the UK for a few years."
