Huge 27-storey apartment block in Cardiff city centre given go ahead

Plans to build a huge 27-storey apartment block in the centre of Cardiff have been given the go ahead.

The huge tower will have 188 apartments and is due to be built at Crawshay Court on Curran Road, south of Cardiff Railway Station.

The towering development will have 120 one-bedroom apartments, 66 two-bed apartments, and two three-bed apartments.

Cardiff council's planning committee voted to grant permission on July 22, 2020, after criticising previous plans in June that year for not having enough space for bicycle storage.

Developers Urban Centric - a division of Portabella Ltd - said that they would change original plans which had space for 100 bicycles to allow space for 200 instead, which has been approved.

The developer will now pay £550,000 Section 106 money in total, which will be spent on things like new school places and improving community facilities.

A design and access statement submitted to Cardiff council as part of the planning application reads: "The project represents an opportunity to visually state that something serious is happening on the southern side of Penarth Road and Callaghan Square when witnessed from the train station and the new transport hub.

"It will be a suitable preface and introduction to the development area south of Penarth Road. It will also act as a“signal” from the station that new development is happening south of Penarth Road."

The statement also mentions a "rain garden," which will be located on the roof of the building.

The statement goes on to say that the 'vision' of the project is to "create a compact living opportunity in a tall form at a key position in the city," and that the development "will provide a tall building of forward thinking architecture meant to be immediately recognisable by its height, silhouette, materials and architectural treatment."

The site of the development is within 200 metres of the city centre and 100 metres of Cardiff Central Station. It is also set to be close to the development of the old Brains Brewery site.
