A record of 3-36-1 during his reign in Cleveland has done little to dissuade former Browns head coach Hue Jackson from his belief in his coaching abilities. Jackson remains delusionally optimistic about his chances to land another head coaching job in the NFL.
Jackson joined WFNZ in Charlotte to talk about his career, among other topics. In an interview with co-host Nick Wilson, formerly of 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, Jackson had the audacity to proclaim this,
“Oh, yeah, I mean I think I can. I mean, just because the situation in Cleveland [didn’t work out] doesn’t mean that you can’t coach. There’s a lot of great coaches who came before me that coached there and went on and did great things…I’ve said this before, I think during those times, it was probably some of the best coaching I did contrary to what people think, because you’re always doing anything and everything you can to find a way to win.”
Jackson was fired after a humiliating loss to the Steelers dropped the 2018 Browns to 2-5-1. Under interim coach Gregg Williams, the Browns quickly rebounded to finish 7-8-1.
Our take
Jackson consistently proved he was not up to the task of being an NFL head coach. From his decision-making to game preparations, his finger-pointing and lack of personal responsibility for the failures of his Browns teams, it would be a major stretch for another NFL franchise to even consider interviewing Jackson for a head coaching position. Even his quick stop as the offensive coach in Cincinnati following his Browns dismissal did little to prove he should even be granted another chance as a top assistant.
