Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O'Brien misses Derby clash following positive Covid-19 test

Reported Leeds United target Lewis O’Brien is missing from the Huddersfield Town squad that is facing Derby County this afternoon due to a positive COVID-19 test.

O’Brien is one of four Town players missing from the squad for this reason, alongside Harry Toffolo, Josh Ruffels and Lee Nicholls.

Head coach Carlos Corberán has also had to miss the trip to Pride Park after testing positive for the illness to put Town’s season opener preparation into chaos.

All those who have tested positive, though, including O’Brien, are said to be okay, but a return date remains unknown.

Leeds have reportedly already had a bid rejected for the 22-year-old’s signature but are said to be readying an improved offer as they look to bolster their midfield options.

The Whites’ initial bid was thought to be in the region of £2m and £3m but a new significant offer is being prepared for O’Brien, whose contract at the John Smith’s Stadium expires next summer.

O’Brien progressed through the ranks of the Terriers’ academy but got his first taste of senior action in League One when he spent the season on loan at West Yorkshire neighbours Bradford City.

He enjoyed a good season on a personal level as he netted four goals and provided three assists in 40 league appearances.

The Colchester born midfielder has since established himself as a regular in the Town first team since that loan spell and in his first full season with the Terriers, he won the club’s player of the year.

O’Brien has emerged as Marcelo Bielsa’s first choice midfield target this summer following their failed attempt at securing the signature of Conor Gallagher on loan from Chelsea.

Should he arrive at Elland Road, O’Brien would be competing alongside Stuart Dallas and Mateusz Klich for a place in the Whites’ number eight role.
