Huddersfield Town become first Premier League team relegated in March since Derby County

Huddersfield Town have been relegated from the Premier League with six games left to play, and could be one of Nottingham Forest's opponents in the Championship next season.

Their two-year spell in the top-flight came to an end after Saturday afternoon's results went against them.

The Terriers become just the second team to be relegated from the Premier League in March after Derby County's record low points tally back in 2007/08.

Huddersfield will not take that record away from the Rams as they have already picked up 14 points this term, with Billy Davies' men amassing just 11 in their dismal campaign.

Town need two more points to overtake the second-worst record which is currently held by Sunderland, who clocked up 15 in the 2005/06 season.

The Yorkshire outfit's fate was confirmed on Saturday after being beaten 2-0 by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park - with both Burnley and Southampton winning, that condemned them to a Championship return almost two years after beating Reading at Wembley in the play-off final.

Fulham will surely join them in the second tier next season as they have just three more points than Huddersfield meaning that if the Cottagers fail to pick up any points against Watford on Tuesday night then they too will be unable to escape the grips of relegation.

Martin O'Neill refused to give up hope as 'second best' Nottingham Forest staged late comeback to beat Swansea City

Then it is a battle between Cardiff, Burnley, Southampton and Brighton to avoid the final spot in the drop zone and a spot in the second tier next term.

The Welsh side are the current occupants of 18th place but with two games in hand over 17th-placed Burnley they will have the chance to overtake them.
