Huddersfield manager Danny Cowley says there's absolutely no place for discrimination after James McClean abuse

Huddersfield manager Danny Cowley says there is "absolutely no place in football or society for any discrimination at any level" after sectarian abuse was directed at James McClean.

The Derry native, who has been vocal about sectarian abuse he has received in English football in the past, applauded when an announcement was made in the second-half of Stoke City's game with Huddersfield at John Smith's Stadium on New Year's Day.

Speaking today, the Terriers boss said: "The first I knew about it was when the referee spoke to us. We are still waiting for the referee's report.

"As a club and certainly from myself, there is absolutely no place in football or society for any discrimination at any level.

"It is always sad when it happens. Football is a brilliant game; a game I love dearly and it is horrible when situations like this arise.

"Unfortunately, I don't think it is just football, but a society issue and it is something we all have a responsibility as human beings to tackle together."

During yesterday's match, fans were warned that "offensive behaviour is affecting the game and will not be tolerated" shortly after the referee James Linington had briefly stopped play.

Chants about the IRA were heard moments before the incident and Linington had spoken to both Stoke manager Michael O'Neill and Cowley on the sidelines.
