Hucknall residents share mixed response after new McDonald's gets the go-ahead

Local residents have shared their thoughts on plans for a new McDonald's restaurant, after the chain recently won an appeal to go-ahead.

The fast-food giant was granted permission to move forward with its plans for a new site in Hucknall, after the initial application was rejected by the local council.

The appeal was launched in April last year to planning inspectors, who then looked at the proposals again and overturned the original decision.

Plans were initially rejected because of the potential for noise, anti-social behaviour, smells and litter – despite planning officers recommending it go ahead.

Residents in the area have responded with mixed feelings, with some saying it may take business out of the town centre, while others have suggested it's the 'best place for it'.

More than 45,000 Nottinghamshire workers set for pay rise as minimum wage goes up

Graham Smith, 50, believes that too much focus is being placed on developing areas outside of the town center.

The market trader said: “I would say it’s bad but they’re already building all this stuff outside of town anyway.

“It causes a polo effect, where everything is built outside the town centre, it takes the other businesses out of the town.

“They shouldn’t build anything on the outskirts.”

However, Gary Booth, felt it would be a more convenient location for him to grab a meal.

The 56-year-old said: “Well I think it’s the best place for it, it would be nice to go somewhere to get a decent burger or a milkshake.

“I would prefer to have a McDonalds here, then I wouldn’t have to travel as far to go to one.”

Caroline Dixon, 52, visits the area regularly from her home in Sutton.

She said: “I suppose McDonald's is better than other chains to have in Hucknall.

“I can’t see it affecting any shops on the high street.

“If the council was that bothered about it then surely they would do more to help the town centre.”
