Huawei's 5G testbed gets untucked

Mr Pichet, third from left, and Mr Wu, third from right, attend the 5G seminar.

Huawei plans to kick off a 5G testbed, the first in the region, on Feb 8 in Sri Racha, in Chon Buri province.

The company is holding a three-day seminar titled "Embracing 5G: Business Leadership Training", to highlight the advantages of 5G and explain the testbed in depth.

The testbed will involve 360-degree augmented reality/virtual reality; remote driving; multi-HD video and smart buses.

Contributions from international experts are also expected to shed light on 5G-driven innovations and inspirations, industry trends, business use cases and other key technologies that will use early adoption of 5G to help reshape corporate strategies.

Huawei is investing a total of US$5 million (158 million baht) in Thailand through the 5G testbed. The testbed is designed to serve as an R&D centre for new technologies, with researchers offering consultations and a full range of new innovations.

Initiated by the Digital Economy and Society (DE) Ministry, the 5G sites are located at Kasetsart University's Sri Racha campus. The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission has been tasked with providing spectrum ranges for the 5G trial, in cooperation with major mobile operators and internet service providers, said Pichet Durongkaveroj, DE minister.

"We will fully support and collaborate with our partners to enact 5G innovations before the technology is formally introduced to the market. The system is expected to become the backbone that connects billions of devices, leading to full implementation of Internet of Things, artificial intelligence [AI], cloud network, and other innovations," said James Wu, president of Huawei Southeast Asia.

"This will help accelerate the government's desire to enter the digital era and become the region's digital hub."

The use of 5G is expected to pave the way for new services and applications such as AI-assisted health, smart manufacturing, smart cities and education.

Huawei has secured more than 30 commercial contracts for 5G, topping its competitors.

More than 25,000 base stations have already been shipped to different markets in the world.
