Huawei launches £310 smart glasses with speakers hidden in the arms

With face masks now compulsory in many settings across the UK, Brits’ ears have been working overtime holding up masks, headphones, earrings and glasses.

But Huawei’s latest gadget brings together glasses and headphones, giving your ears a much-deserved break.

The tech giant has launched Huawei × Gentle Monster Eyewear II - smart glasses and sunglasses with speakers hidden in the arms.

From the outside, the glasses and sunglasses look like any other, but they actually have tiny discreet speakers in the arms.

Huawei explained: “The semi-open, ultra-thin, large-amplitude speaker effectively cancels out sound leakage and provides the wearer with high-definition stereo sound.

“The newly upgraded Smart Interaction function turns the glasses into your own personal assistant, which offers not only faster access to information, but also a more intelligent form of interaction, providing consumers with a brand new experience of smart wearable technology.”

The glasses come in a range of styles, and the lenses can be swapped out for prescription lenses, should you need them.

The inner-facing speakers play music or stream calls direct to your ears, meaning you can hear clearly but anyone around you won’t be able to eavesdrop.

Huawei explained: “Eyewear II also features a unique acoustic privacy design, with one semi-open speaker on each side of the lens temple which transmits sound directly to the wearer's ear through the directional sound chamber, effectively reducing sound leakage and providing a clearer and more layered stereo experience.

“Meanwhile, both temples include a leakage hole design that can offset the directional sound waves generated by sound cavities, further reducing sound leakage.”

Aside from the speakers, the arms also contain smart gesture controls.

For example, to play/pause a song or answer/end a call, users can simply double tap on the right arm, while a double tap on the left arm will summon your smart assistant.

Other smart features include greetings when the sunglasses sense you’ve put them on, including ‘Good Morning’, ‘Good Afternoon’ or ‘Good Evening’, depending on the time of day.

In terms of battery, Huawei says that the sunglasses can play music for up to 5 hours on a single charge.

While the sunglasses are pretty futuristic, unsurprisingly, they’re not exactly cheap. The collection is priced at £310, and will go on sale from November 3.
