HSE staff have been asked to reduce the use of single-use plastics.
This also includes adopting eco-friendly alternatives like using reusable cups, cutlery, and crockery amongst other things.
Health Minister Simon Harris said: “The HSE is the largest public sector organisation.
“The steps the health service is taking will have a significant impact on reducing single-use plastics.”
He has written to all hospitals ordering them to drop single-use plastics for sustainable alternatives, the Irish Independent reports.

HSE managers will also purchase biodegradable alternatives where reusable kitchenware might not be appropriate.
Other steps taken include making posters and a website to teach the staff on the impact of single-use plastics on the environment and how to tackle these problems.
Ireland ranks number one in the production of plastic waste in Europe with a single personal generating an average of 61kg every year.
