HSE says booster Covid vaccine doses to begin for immunocompromised next week

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has confirmed a third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine for those who are immunocompromised will begin to be given out from next week.

People will begin to be notified of their appointments from Wednesday, September 29.

From there, the administration of the third dose of the vaccine will begin on Friday, October 1.

HSE CEO, Paul Reid, explained the process on RTE's Morning Ireland radio show, saying that the risk would be determined by a number of clinical teams.

"It will be a period of five to six weeks to complete this programme," he said.

Mr Reid noted that the programme would not be easy.

"It does address people who are highly immunocompromised, organ recipients, renal patients, certain cancer patients and certain people on certain medications," he added.

For those wondering if they were considered as high risk, Mr Reid said if they did not receive an appointment notification next week, they were not in the category.

Meanwhile, the Government is to donate at least one million vaccines to low-income countries, it has been confirmed.

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly and the Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said Ireland will donate the doses to the Covax programme.

It comes as the European Union said it will donate another 200 million Covid-19 vaccines to developing countries.

Mr Donnelly said that universal and fair access to Covid-19 vaccines and treatments is a priority for Ireland and for the EU.

The Covax programme aims to provide poorer states with vaccines from wealthy countries.
