HSE pleased with drop in hospital numbers but urge people to 'remain cautious'

The HSE's Chief Executive has reminded the public to stay cautious as the vaccination rollout continues "at a great pace".

Addressing a press conference Thursday afternoon, Paul Reid also gave an update as to the state of the virus in Irish hospitals.

As of yesterday, 70 people were receiving treatment in hospital for Covid-19, 23 of whom were in intensive care.

There was an important note from St James's Hospital, who recorded no Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours.

This is a major drop off from a peak of 130 back in February.

But as the vaccination rollout continues, Mr Reid issued a minor warning to the public, particularly given how our neighbours are dealing with the Delta variant.

"We must always remain cautious. We only need to look at the UK yesterday to see the dangers of the Delta variant in particular," he said.

"They recorded 7,500 new cases of Covid yesterday, that was their highest since the end of February."

On the vaccine programme, Mr Reid added it was continuing at "a really great pace"

As it stands, 3.1 million doses have been administered.

Over 2.2 million people have now received one jab and over 1.1 million have now received their second.

26% of the population are fully vaccinated, while 57% have been jabbed with a first dose.

It comes as Micheal Martin issued a "note of warning" over the Delta variant as he said he is keeping a "very close eye" on rising hospital and case numbers in the UK.

The mutation is spreading across the Irish Sea and the Taoiseach said that despite the improving situation here, certain parts of England are seeing a rise in infections.

Mr Martin also set a new jab target as he aims for 70% of the adult population to be fully vaccinated by the end of next month.
