HSE closes all vaccine centres and puts jab registration on hold as booster shots rolled out

The Health Service Executive has closed all vaccine centres for the day and put online and phone registration on hold while they update the Covid-19 Vaccination Information System.

While the HSE will resume giving jabs again tomorrow, you won’t be able to register for a vaccine or a booster shot at all today.

Vaccines from your GP or Pharmacist are going ahead as normal.

The HSE has said that the system update is essential to increase capability of the vaccine booster system.

Meanwhile, the HSE will start the rollout of booster Covid vaccines for those aged 60 and over this week.

The National Immunisation Advisory Committee will also be discussing the booster vaccines for healthcare workers this week after calls from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation to include healthcare workers in the booster rollout.

Hundreds of healthcare workers are infected with Covid each week as studies suggest jabs wane in effectiveness after six months.

Most healthcare workers were vaccinated up to ten months ago and are more susceptible to infection now.

Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Claire Byrne this morning, Phil Ni Sheaghdha, the General Secretary of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation said it is clear that the waning effect of the vaccine is impacting on healthcare staff.

She said that if booster shots are not provided to frontline healthcare staff, further closure of wards can be expected as well as cancellation of elective surgeries.
