HSE chief's plea as Ireland records highest number of new coronavirus cases since June 13

The CEO of the HSE has pleaded with the public to stay committed to fighting the spread of the coronavirus.

It comes after the Republic of Ireland reported its highest daily number of new cases since June 13.

The Department of Health announced on Tuesday evening that 40 new infections have been recorded - the largest figure since 46 were registered more that six weeks ago.

Speaking on Wednesday morning, the HSE's chief Paul Reid said: "C'mon everybody.

"This is a long road but we are winning by many measures.

"We all wish this virus would just go away but it won't. But we can all reduce its impact.

"A lot of talk about forcing compliance but winning commitment is always best in my book."

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre reported no new deaths on Tuesday.

However, the Acting Chief Medical Officer issued a warning as 30 of the new cases recorded were in people aged under 45.

Dr Ronan Glynn said: "Today’s cases are spread across a range of different settings and age groups.

"75% of cases are under 45 years of age, with a median age of 33 years.

"At least half of today’s cases were known close contacts of other confirmed cases.

“It remains vital that if a person is concerned that they have been in contact with a confirmed case or is experiencing symptoms associated with Covid-19, that they isolate and come forward for testing without delay."
