HSE chief Paul Reid issues stark reminder to young people ahead of weekend

The CEO of the HSE has issued a stark reminder to young people that they're transmission of the virus could claim the life of someone else.

Paul Reid's warning comes as Ireland prepares to enter the second weekend of phase three.

On Thursday, the Department of Health announced six more coronavirus deaths and 23 new cases - 77% of which were in people under the age of 25.

Mr Reid has reminded young people they are not immune and called on the public to "act together" this weekend.

Speaking on Friday morning, he said: "Just a reminder... we are still living with a deadly virus.

"If you are younger, you are not immune.

"If it doesn't kill you, your transmission could cost the life of someone else.

"Let's all get our act together this weekend."

Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn said all new infections reported on Thursday were in those under 45 - the first time health officials have seen that statistic.

And Thursday marked the first time Covid-19's reproductive rate in Ireland has gone above one since the peak.

Professor Phillip Nolan, Chair of the NPHET Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group, revealed that there has been an increase in the number of cases over the last two weeks.

He said: "We are seeing an increase in the number of reported cases over the last 2 weeks and the R-number is now at or above 1.

"There is an immediate need for all of us to take care and caution in our decisions and actions."

Dr Glynn added: "Today NPHET has recommended that all visitors to healthcare settings including hospitals, GP practices and pharmacies, should wear face coverings.

"15 of today's confirmed cases are directly or indirectly related to travel. NPHET today reiterates that all non-essential travel overseas should be avoided.

"In addition, 77% of cases reported today are under 25 years of age. Covid-19 is extremely infectious and none of us are immune."
