HSE boss Paul Reid warns of impact of harsh coronavirus restrictions as Ireland faces Level 5 lockdown

The HSE Chief Executive Officer has weighed in on the news that Ireland may be heading for level 5 warning of the impact of restrictions on society and the economy.

Last night the National Public Health Emergency Team met to discuss the ongoing coronavirus crisis in Ireland as cases continue to soar.

And it was recommended that the entire country moved to strict Level 5 lockdown in order to curb the spread of the virus.

Level 5 guidelines would see the country return to harsh restrictions similar to those brought in during the first extreme lockdown back in April.

However this morning HSE boss Paul Reid warned of the "impacts" strict lockdown can have on society and the economy.

Mr Reid said: "There's obvious concerns about the trends on #COVID19.

"But we also know the impacts of severe & regular restrictions in society on the public health, wellbeing, mental health and the economy.

"Level 5 recommendation to Government has to be considered in this context too."

If brought in the restrictions would mean that all social gatherings among people indoor or outdoor would not be allowed.

The only retail stores and services that would be allowed to open under Level Five are essential ones.

This means most shops would be forced to close their doors once again. Pubs would also be forced to shut again while restaurants will only be allowed to offer takeaway service.

Similar to the original lockdown in March and April, under Level Five you would not be allowed to travel more than five kilometres from your home, and you can only leave for exercise, assuming your trip isn't essential. Schools however would remain open.

All visits to family and friends both indoors and outdoors would be banned, as would visiting other households.
