HSE and Dublin City Council under fire as rat infestations create ‘major public health hazard’

Dublin City Council are under fire as rat infestations are creating a “major public health hazard” in the county.

A demonstration is set to take place on Monday, September 6 at 5:30pm outside Mansion House, the residence of the Lord Mayor of Dublin.

Chris Andrews and Ciarán Ó Meachair created the event on Facebook as they believe the rodent problem creates an unsafe environment for children.

They want DCC to proactively make environments less attractive to rat populations, protect bins in flat complexes from rats and birds, more resources for pest control units in Dublin City and they also want sewers and breeding grounds under control.

They said: “Residents need Dublin City Council and the HSE to do more to tackle rat infestations and the environment in which they thrive.

“We are organising a protest to the door of Senior Management in Dublin City Council and the Minister.

“We need to provide a safe and clean environment in the city for the benefit of everyone.”

Councillor Daniel Céitinn and members of Sinn Fein are bringing an emergency motion to the Council meeting.

“The HSE are responsible for pest control in the region, but Dublin City Council needs to take a more active role," they continued.

“The most important work that DCC can do is proactively maintain residential complexes and public domain to make these environments less attractive to rat populations.

“Bins in flat complexes need to be better protected from both rats and birds.

“Sewers and breeding grounds need to be brought under control with targeted measures which any pest control company could use.

“We need more resources for pest control units in Dublin City to deal with this problem in a serious way.”
