HRM Homecare aims to recruit 150 staff from hospitality and tourism for care jobs

Care at home company HRM Homecare is to create 150 permanent jobs for hospitality and tourism workers who have lost their jobs due to the coronavirus.

The Kilmarnock-based firm is to simplify its training process to fast-track new recruits into caring for its hundreds of elderly and vulnerable clients in west and central Scotland.

The care sector faces a shortage of skilled staff, who are classed as key workers and Covid-19 related absences would be disastrous for the people who depend on them.

Managing director Lynn Laughland said: “Like the NHS, care at home sector has a hugely vital role to play in today’s society. For many years we have helped those with severe life challenges continue to live well in their own homes.

"As everywhere, we are facing an unprecedented threat to our ability to carry out our jobs due to Covid-19.

"We are striving to make sure we have the ability and capability to meet the demand that COVID-19 has brought and are following the current guidance so that every possible safeguard is in place to protect both our staff and our service users from infection from Coronavirus as our carers go about their jobs."

HRM Homecare employs 246 people and provides 9,000 hours of care for 680 people in areas including Falkirk, Glasgow, North and South Lanarkshire, East Renfrewshire,Renfrewshire and East Dunbartonshire.

Laughland said the two-day intensive training course would be provided free of charge and includes briefing on the latest social care guidance from the Scottish Government and NHS Scotland.

She added: “We are really keen to hear from those passionate about helping others and when the chips are down will show their mettle.”
