WASHINGTON _ House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer is expected to make a "full recovery quickly" after being hospitalized for pneumonia.
Hoyer was hospitalized on Tuesday at the George Washington University Hospital, Politico reported.
"He is being treated with antibiotics and resting, and is expected to make a full recovery quickly," spokeswoman Katie Grant said Wednesday. "He looks forward to being back at work very soon."
The Maryland Democrat is the No. 2 in the minority party's leadership and is considered to be the likely successor to Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
Hoyer makes frequent campaign appearances for Democratic candidates. His spokeswoman told Politico that a weekend trip to Wisconsin and Illinois was his 25th trip of this election cycle.
Hoyer served as House majority leader from 2007 to 2011.
