Howrah man held for spreading fake news

KOLKATA: The Behala police arrested a resident of Howrah on Monday for allegedly trying to spread fake news in the city, claiming that some cinema goers were “threatened” for attending the screening of a movie at two cinema halls located in Behala and Tollygunge. The accused, Ajit Verma, also made false claims in his Facebook page too, said an officer.

“He is the member of a WhatsApp group that generates fake stories and fake photographs. We are questioning him to ascertain the role of others involved in the case,” said an investigator.

Cops indicated that arrests are also likely regarding the false propaganda about a Tollygunge cinema hall too. The cops had tweeted on Sunday night and asked netizens to be aware of such fake news.
