Howie Roseman confirms the Eagles are ‘working towards’ extension for Carson Wentz

Howie Roseman is known to be a frugal and smart front office guru, so it makes sense for the Eagles to give Carson Wentz an extension before the star signal-caller and one of the 100 most famous athletes on the planet, wins an MVP or leads the team to another Super Bowl. Speaking Monday at the NFL Annual Meetings in Phoenix, Roseman confirmed that a contract extension was in the works, and made it sound as if it’ll be sooner than later.

Roseman doesn’t have to act now, as the team could choose to exercise Wentz’s fifth-year option for 2020 before the May 3 deadline if they can’t agree to a long-term deal. With Roseman being an executive that prefers to avoid distractions, it would be shocking if they waited a year to extend Wentz, or even approached the idea of placing the franchise tag on the quarterback, similar to how Washington did Kirk Cousins for a couple of seasons.

Wentz is projected to sign a deal making an average annual value of $30.8 million a year, but guaranteed money and incentives will really be the key.

In 40 career games with the Eagles, Wentz has completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 10,152 yards and 70 touchdowns to 23 interceptions for a 92.5 passer rating. In 2018, less than a year removed from a torn ACL and LCL Wentz completed 69.6 percent of his passes for 3,074 yards, 21 touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a 102.2 passer rating, before being shut down with a back injury.
