Howard Wilkinson on what Leeds United fans loved the most about Norman Hunter

The news of Norman Hunter's death has led to many within the Leeds United family, past and present, paying their tributes.

Former manager Howard Wilkinson has added his voice to the thousands of tributes paid to Hunter, who died earlier today at the age of 76.

The club announced the sad news of his passing on Friday morning after a battle against coronavirus.

Hunter made more than 700 appearances in all competitions for the Whites and was an integral member of Don Revie’s iconic teams during his 15-year Elland Road career.

He remained a popular figure after retiring, first working with local media before taking up matchday duties on behalf of the club.

Wilkinson, who famously led Leeds to the English First Division title in 1992, says Hunter must have been a manager's dream due to his availability and passion for the club and city.

"With regards to Norman as a player, I'd have said he would have been a manager's dream," Wilkinson told Sky Sports.

"He was low maintenance, high performance week in, week out for more than 50 games a season for most of his career.

"You don't play that number of games over that many years without injury.

"So he must have been like gold dust for Leeds United at the time.

"He was a super player and whenever I met him he was a nice, friendly bloke.

"Once he landed in Leeds, he became a Leeds boy.

"We celebrated the (club's) centenary recently with a big dinner and lots of stars and Norman was there and was very, very modest.

"He under-played his role in that team and I think that was part of his attraction to the Leeds fans - they considered him to be one of them."
