Howard University in Washington, DC, United States, has withdrawn places for 502 incoming first-year students who failed to meet deadlines related to tuition payments, payment arrangements, scholarships or other financial aid, just weeks before the Fall 2026 semester is scheduled to begin.

The university said it had repeatedly communicated with students and their families between March and July about the requirements for securing enrolment for the semester, which begins on August 17, through emails, personalised financial aid information, videos and information sessions.
“Students who did not meet the established payment, payment arrangement, or scholarship and other financial aid reporting deadlines have been notified that the University can no longer hold their place in the incoming class,” the university said in a circular issued on Thursday.
The timing of the university's decision is a concern for the affected students as they may have limited time to find alternative universities, arrange accommodation and secure financial aid elsewhere.
The issue has particularly affected students whose scholarships or other financial aid were still pending. Howard said it is reviewing information related to anticipated scholarship funding and other financial aid, and would consider relevant and genuine circumstances involving pending financial aid.
Howard said finalising enrolment was necessary for planning academic programmes, housing, financial aid and student support services. It said students who believe their financial position was not accurately reflected by the deadline can contact the university, with individual cases to be reviewed to determine whether adjustments can be made.
Additionally, the university has directed students with questions about their enrollment status to its Office of Enrolment Management and those with questions about pending scholarships and account balances to the Office of the Bursar.
