Howard Mudd steps down from assistant role with Colts

The Indianapolis Colts brought the famed Howard Mudd out of retirement this offseason, giving him the role of senior offensive assistant — which had him working mostly with the offensive line.

However, Mudd, 77, has stepped down from his role with the Colts, head coach Frank Reich told reporters Friday. Reich added that it wasn’t due to any physical factors.

“He has decided to step down on his own terms,” Reich said. “Just within the last week or so, he had mentioned to me he had just kind of thought that his time was coming, and great on your own terms to be able to do that. And he did his job, with what we asked him to do. He was ready to step down and move on, so we thank him for his contribution.”

Reich said Mudd believes his time has come in terms of ending his role as a consultant for the Colts.

The Colts brought Mudd in to work with the offensive line this offseason along with new offensive line coach Chris Strausser, who replaced Dave DeGuglielmo. Mudd had previously coached the Colts offensive line from 1998-2009. He retired in 2012 after coaching the Philadelphia Eagles offensive line for two seasons.

The offensive line will continue to be coached by Strausser. Reich has also been known to play a heavy role in the protection plans and blocking schemes.
