Howard French, described as "a pivotal figure in the creation of the modern Daily Mail" (according to the Mail itself), has died aged 95. He worked for the Mail's owner, Associated Newspapers for 40 years, including a seven-year stint as editor of the now-defunct Daily Sketch in the 1960s.
