Howard Donald quits Twitter after backlash over rant slamming school shutdown

Take That's Howard Donald has quit Twitter after a backlash following his outspoken anti-lockdown rant.

The singer slammed the government for closing schools, saying they were "psychologically damaging" children.

He then issued a series of furious replies to followers who disagreed with his views, before writing: "I’m coming off Twitter for a while.

"Some People don’t like opinions and only believe what they hear therefore I’m losing followers which is fine. Yes covid is real but at least i have an alternative view and ain’t afraid to say whereas other people are afraid to lose followers."

The father of four - who has admitted he struggles with his young family - made his opinions clear following Boris Johnson's Monday night announcement of school closures.

"How psychologically damaging it is to put kids in school for one day and then say there’s a lockdown till mid feb!" he wrote, after an initial "f***ing great" tweet.

Howard, whose 15-year-old daughter lives with him and is mid-GCSEs, continued: "It’s almost as if it’s planned! Poor children and parents who will now have to take the brunt of home schooling."

Howard tagged his post "lost generation" but after a fan disagreed he changed this to "psychologically damaged generation!".

When a fan said the lockdown meant little more than wearing masks in shops, Howard added: "Oh you mean all them lovely shops that are open?

"There won’t be any shops left pretty soon and most small businesses because everyone will be out of business and only the big corporate supermarkets will be running the show."

His fans weren't impressed, with one writing "You're losing the plot!"

Howard responded angrily: "Losing our freedom more like."

He told another fan who disagreed: "We will be all become communists and then people will be wondering where ALL their freedoms went."

Howard and wife illustrator Katie Halil share sons Bowie, who was born in January 2016, and Dougie Bear, who was born in February 2017, while his 15-year-old daughter Lola recently moved from Germany to live with him and attend school in England.

He also has oldest daughter Grace, 23.

This isn't the first time Howard has ruffled feathers with his outspoken views on Twitter.

Back in June he sparked controversy by sharing a bizarre rant against face masks and vaccines.

The 52-year-old said people were wearing designer face masks as if they were "the new sunglasses".

He also called vaccinations "questionable" and suggested that research into a vaccine was being conducted by Bill Gates to "make a couple more billion".

After a huge backlash for his comments, Howard threatened to delete his Twitter account.
