How your empty driveway could earn you £1,700

Bristol residents with private driveways are cashing in some of the biggest sums in the country by renting them out.

Finding a parking spot in many parts of the city can be tricky, and most car parks charge a premium for the privilege.

According to the website YourParkingSpace.co.uk, where people can advertise their parking spots and book them out, the average income for its Bristol clients is £1,716 per year or £143 per month.

This is the fourth-highest when towns and cities in the UK were compared, with London, Brighton and Edinburgh taking the top three spots respectively.

In the capital, people who rent out their driveways on the site are seeing an average annual income of £2,100, or £175 per month.

More than 350,000 across the UK are listed on the site, and motorists can search their area for an available space and book it for a certain time frame.

The site expects to see a surge in demand, as people returning to work are still being told to avoid public transport where possible.

Its managing director Harrison Woods said: “Empty driveways continue to offer a significant extra income for households the length and breadth of the UK, which is possibly even more welcome now than ever before.

“With lockdown restrictions being eased and more people returning to their workplace, plus being advised by the government to avoid public transport if possible, we expect a new surge in demand for empty driveways as motorists struggle to find places to park near their places of employment.”

Drivers who use the site can choose to search for an hourly or monthly rate, and have to choose the date they are looking to park.

The site brings up a map with the available spaces, including public car parks, and the filter tool can be used to specify the type of parking space being sought.

Drivers can also leave reviews of each parking space.

A monthly search from next week in Bristol brought up almost 400 options, with private spaces ranging in price.

One space in a BS3 postcode was being advertised for £60 per month, while another also in BS3 was more than £300 per month.

According to the site, it is completely free for people to list their parking spaces.
