How you could get money off your shopping by returning plastic bottles to Sainsbury's

Supermarket giant Sainsbury's has launched a trial where customers will be paid for old plastic bottles.

The grocer has launched a reverse vending recycling trial that will pay customers to return their unwanted plastic and cans to store.

The trial is currently being piloted just up the road in Lincoln, but could be rolled out to other stores in the near future.

Customers will be given 5p coupons for each bottle, with customers allowed to return up to 500 items per visit.

That's a total of up to £25 per visit.

Plastic bottles of up to three litres can be deposited, as well as metal cans.

However, the containers you deposit must be available to buy in Sainsbury's.

This means while you can recycle bottles from big brands like Coca-Cola, you won't be able to recycle own-brand ones from other retailers.

The grocer said it plans to extend the trial to four more stores including some smaller shops in the next few weeks.
