Tier 3: How you can still meet your friends and family

As Nottingham edges closer to tighter restrictions, there are a lot of questions surrounding the rules around Tier 3.

Liverpool, Lancashire and South Yorkshire are already under the High Alert level, meaning the tightest restrictions are in place.

There are baseline rules for every area in Tier 3, but some of the restrictions vary depending on agreements made by local councils.

For example, decisions can be made to close venues such as leisure centres and gyms.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed Nottinghamshire leaders are in discussion with the Government on moving into the highest coronavirus alert level, Tier 3.

He said: "Elsewhere discussions on moving to the very high alert level continue with local leaders in South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and the North East."

In all areas under the restrictions, you can still meet family and friends outside your household in a socially distanced way outdoors.

But the rules are clear that you must not meet socially with friends and family indoors in any setting unless they are part of your household, support bubble or for childcare.

This includes private homes and indoors in hospitality venues, such as pubs. You must also not meet with people outside of your household or support bubble in a private garden or in most outdoor public venues.

The government guidance states that the way you can continue to see friends and family who you don't live within groups of 6 or less in certain outdoor public spaces, such as:

  • parks, beaches, countryside, forests
  • public gardens (whether or not you pay to enter them), allotments
  • outdoor sports courts and facilities, and playgrounds

Meeting in larger groups is against the law. You can be fined £200 for the first offence, doubling for further offences up to a maximum of £6,400.

In very high alert level areas, as a baseline, pubs and bars will be closed unless they are serving substantial meals, like a main lunchtime or evening meal.

Additional restrictions may apply depending on discussions between central and local government.

Retail and places of worship will remain open, but subject to the further restrictions on social contact that apply for this level.
