How you can see giant puppet Little Amal in Wigan this weekend

A 3.5-metre puppet will walk through Wigan this weekend, as part of huge global arts event The Walk.

Named Little Amal, the puppet is of a nine-year-old refugee girl who has travelled 8,000km visiting 65 cities, towns and villages.

Her extraordinary journey from the Syria-Turkey border will end right here in Greater Manchester.

A huge event at Castlefield Bowl, produced by Manchester International Festival, will take place in November 3.

When the Birds Land will be directed by Simon Stone and is set to be a celebration of song, dance, live music and puppetry.

Before then, Little Amal will visit Wigan on October 31, where she will be greeted by performances from local communities and artists.

She'll be at Trencherfield Mill at 3pm for a 45 minute show including dance from WigLe Dance and music from Wigan’s Youth Brass Band.

Then she'll travel to The Edge conference centre, with a road closure in place along Southgate, for an installation produced by Manchester Street Poem.

The art collective, made up of people who have experienced of homelessness, will read stories to Little Amal at 4pm.

Councillor Chris Ready, cabinet member for communities and culture said: "It’s a privilege to be included in ‘The Walk’. We’re excited to be working with our cultural partners to also hold a number of activities for visitors while Little Amal tours the Pier quarter.

"Little Amal is an astounding piece of art with a really significant message. Her journey is representative of the tens of thousands of children who have been displaced by war or persecution.

"We’re a compassionate borough and are so proud to have been included in Little Amal’s journey."

On November 2, she is set to meet schools and community groups in Rochdale.

Since July, she has been at the heart of more than 120 events in countries including Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany and Belgium.
