How you can save more than £300 a year on bathroom water bills

As the cost of living continues to increase, Britons are now faced with the backlash of inflation and some households are now struggling to make ends meet.

Many families will be counting the pennies as they are faced with skyrocketing costs. But, one of the ways you could be saving money is in the bathroom.

Brits can expect to spend £16,576 on showering and £24,591.60 on baths over a lifetime. However, according to bathroom experts Drench.co.uk there are a few ways you can cut costs in the bathroom.

These range from cutting the amount of time you spend in the shower to thinking about how to run your baths.

Dominic Lees-Bell, bathroom expert at Drench.co.uk said, “Whilst we don’t want you to stop enjoying your downtime in the shower or bath, we can all make a difference with a few adjustments. We’ve revealed some helpful tips to cut down on water in the bathroom, which benefits the planet and your pockets with savings of up to £303”.

Here are some ways you can save over £300 on your water bills:

Use a water-saving shower head and save £118

Your choice of shower head can have a big impact on your water bill.

Aerator shower heads can help slash your water bill in half, helping you save £118 a year. These shower heads combine water with air, creating larger droplets and using 50% less water.

Take a five minute shower and save £88

It's simple logic, but cutting down your shower time can save you money on your water bill. The average person takes approximately eight minutes in the shower, using up 62 litres of water.

If you cut down your shower time to five minutes, you can save yourself 23 litres of water - and save £88 on your water bill. To make things easier, set yourself a timer or create a five minute music playlist to make sure you stay within the time frame.

Turn the water off while shaving and save £59

This might not come as a surprise, but leaving the water running while you're shaving is like throwing pennies down the drain.

It takes about two minutes to shave, and if you leave your faucet on, that equates to around 15.6 litres of water. Turning off the water can save you £59 in your annual water bill.

Save £38 by plugging the drain while waiting for water to turn hot

While taking a bath or shower, it's standard practise to wait for the water to to turn hot before stepping in. But did you know this can also cost money?

In some households, it can take as long as a minute before your water turns hot. If you don't have a plug in, you could waste as much as 10 litres of water.

So, rather than waiting for the water to turn hot and letting it all go down the drain, you could leave your plug it. This can help you save £37.95 on your annual water bill.

Polly Shearer, bathroom expert at Drench.co.uk said, “One of the easiest ways you can have an impact is with a water-saving showerhead. They can help reduce your water consumption by up to 50% by either regulating the flow of water through the showerhead or adding air to the water. Both of these will allow you to have a great shower whilst using less water.”

“Flow regulators are a great way to save water in the bathroom if you’re on a tight budget and don’t want to change your entire shower head. These regulators screw onto your shower hose and control the flow of water, reducing the maximum flow and saving you large amounts of water without you even thinking about it. The average flow rate of a shower is between 10-15 litres per minute, but with a flow regulator, this can be reduced from 4-10 litres per minute. These regulators are also widely available for basin taps."
