How you can help Edinburgh doctor's campaign to provide extra masks and gloves for medics

Edinburgh folk are being asked to help raise cash to purchase extra personal protective kits for healthcare staff in the Lothians.

A doctor based in the city has taken it upon himself to start a funding page which aims to support his colleagues "practice safely at such a critical time" as the number of Covid-19 cases continue to grow.

Dr Nestor Demosthenous, who has a medical cosmetic centre on Dundas Street, launched the campaign this week. He fears that PPE supplies will run low, or even become non-existent, as the pandemic escalates.

He has set a goal of £50,000 and is hoping Edinburgh folk can pitch in and do their bit to help fund the additional kit.

According to the page he want funds to buy more essential Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as face fit masks, gloves, visors and gowns.

In an open letter, he said: "I am writing to you for much needed support. Support to help my colleagues, our friends and our family members working in the NHS. They are putting themselves in harm's way for us. They are seeing, treating and caring for our loved ones, all the while, putting themselves at risk of falling ill.

"In this escalating pandemic, we need to look ahead, learn lessons from other countries and anticipate potential problems we may face.

"Personal Protective Equipment (such as masks, visors, gowns and gloves), have all been in short supply in ALL hospitals inundated with Covid-19 patients across the globe.

"This is why I have set up a 'Just giving' page with a target of raising £50,000.

"By raising funds, we can supply healthcare workers in Edinburgh and the Lothians with the necessary protective equipment needed so they can safely continue treating and caring for our ill.

"We have seen so much community spirit, and humanity in these last few weeks across the country. It is beautiful and heart warming. £50,000 is an ambitious target, but I am confident that pulling together across our much valued database of caring clients, we can make a difference. I am sure many of you have felt a bit lost, possibly even helpless. I have too. We want to help, but don't know how. There is very little we can do alone. Greatness comes from unity."

Dr Demosthenous has temporarily closed his clinic so he can focus his efforts on assisting the NHS.

He added: "Together we can help. The team in clinic and I would be so grateful for any donation no matter how big or small. This is a huge heartfelt thank you in advance."
