How you can get €100 off your electricity bill in the coming weeks as details set to be finalised

New details around the €100 credit being offered to domestic electricity account holders in Ireland have come to light as a final decision is just weeks away.

The Electricity Costs Emergency Benefit Scheme will be put to Cabinet for approval later this month.

Over 2.1 million homeowners with domestic electricity accounts will benefit from the once-off support amid the rising cost of living in Ireland.

All electricity customers, including those on pay-as-you-go contracts, will receive €100 off their energy bill, however, no action is needed as it will be automatically applied to accounts.

The Department of Environment, Climate and Communications has said it hopes the scheme will be in effect as soon as March this year.

Each active supplier will have further information posted on their individual websites when the scheme is approved.

It is understood that the exact dates the credit will be delivered to customers will be available online as well - and it will be visible on your electricity bills.

For those who are renting, it will be at the account holder's discretion whether or not they give any portion of this credit to their tenant.

Speaking on Monday, a spokesperson for the department said: “The exact mechanism of how the payment will be applied is currently being finalised and will be announced in this quarter (Q1 of this year).

“A draft of the primary legislation required is currently being finalised with the Office of the Attorney General.

“Cabinet approval for the draft Bill will be sought later this month, with a view to its introduction to the Oireachtas as soon as possible to allow for the establishment of the scheme in this quarter.”
