How you can find out more about plans for an arena in Filton

A number of public events have been organised for anyone who wants to find out more about plans for an arena at the Brabazon hangars in Filton.

Malaysian investment firm YTL plan to build a 17,000 capacity arena at the former airfield site - which would be called YTL Arena.

The firm is currently working to prepare a planning application which it intends to submit to Bristol City Council in September.

This is what the YTL Arena Bristol could look like (YTL)

But now for the first time since the firm revealed its vision for an arena at the site more than a year ago, members of the public can learn more about the plans.

The YTL Arena team has organised a number of roadshows in Bristol and South Gloucestershire for the public to learn more about the scheme.

The first event takes place on Wednesday (July 10) at Yate Shopping Centre.

Members of the team will be on hand from 10am to 4pm - weather permitting - to answer questions and talk through YTL’s vision for the site.

Then on Thursday (July 11) the team will be Kings Chase Shopping Centre in Kingswood, then at the Southmead Greenway Centre on Thursday, July 25 and St Nicholas’ Market on Friday, July 26.

YTL is also holding three drop-in sessions for people who also want to visit the hangars in Filton.

The sessions will take place at the Site Operations Centre at the former Filton Airfield and are on:

  • Thursday, July 18 from 4pm to 8pm, with the last tour of the hangars at 7pm
  • Friday, July 19 from 10am to 4pm, with last tour of the hangars at 3pm
  • Saturday, July 20 from 10am to 4pm, with last tour of the hangars at 3pm

YTL Arena operations managing director, Andrew Billingham, said:  "We are really keen to share our plans with as many people as possible from the greater Bristol region.

"YTL Arena aspires to be a world class entertainment destination for Bristol people to be proud of. To achieve this, we want local people’s feedback as they matter to us and will help inform our proposals."

Visitors are advised to wear comfy shoes and to get in touch in advance if they have any access requirements.

Currently the plans include a 17,000 capacity venue - which will be located in the central hangar.

There are also plans to transform the other two hangars into a ‘Festival Hall’ and ‘The Hub’.

The Festival Hall will be available for exhibitions, trade shows, wedding fairs, food festivals, and also to compliment the main arena activities, such as a warm up area for sports competitions and after show parties for TV shows.

It has also been suggested that local bands would be invited to perform in the Festival Hall ahead of large-scale concerts.

According to YTL the “unique seating bowl” design of the arena would allow for flexible capacity - ranging from 4,000 to 17,000, which would attract a variety of events including theatre, comedy and live music.

There are still few details on The Hub, but it has been described as the 365 day section of the venue that would be used for “work, eat, play and as a visitor attraction”.
