How Wills Memorial was transformed for the filming of The Trial of Christine Keeler

The first episode of the six-part series The Trial of Christine Keeler aired last night (December 30) - and eagle-eyed viewers may have spotted some familiar locations.

That's because much of the BBC One series was filmed in Bristol, with production based at The Bottleyard Studios, in Whitchurch.

During the 17-week stint of filming for the drama, crews used key Bristol locations including Central Library, St Nicholas Market, The Lord Mayor's Mansion House and Wills Memorial Building.

And now it's been revealed just how Wills Memorial was transformed in to the House of Commons for the show, with dozens of props painstakingly positioned to make it look like Parliament.

Huge benches were installed in the great hall alongside dozens of chairs and detailed props to make it look like the House of Commons would have in the 1960s.

What's the drama about?

The six-part series tells the story Christine Keeler, whose simultaneous affairs with a married government minister and a Soviet diplomat were believed to threaten national security

The scandalous Profumo Affair of 1963 saw Christine Keeler accused of bringing down a Conservative government during a critical time in Britain's history.

Although the Secretary of State would deny the affair in Parliament, as scrutiny continued he eventually confessed to the affair and resigned from government.

This led to a loss in confidence in the Conservative government and the resignation of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan.

They went on to lose the 1964 general election to Harold Wilson and the Labour Party.

Filmed in Bristol

A 17-week shoot for The Trial of Christine Keeler was based out of The Bottle Yard studios, while several locations around the city were also used.

These included The Bank Tavern pub and The Strawberry Thief bar, as well as Bristol Central Library and Queen's Square. You can see the full list of Bristol locations used in the drama here.

Rebecca Ferguson, the series’ producer, said filming in Bristol was a "wonderful" experience, and added: "The crew, the people of Bristol, the beauty of the city and surrounding countryside have provided Keeler with the perfect backdrop to create 1960s London.

"I will be a vocal advocate of filming in Bristol and dearly hope to come back soon."

According to Bristol Film Office, more than £16million was generated by filming activity in Bristol in 2018/19. Much of that was at The Bottle Yard Studios, which on its own created 485 jobs.

Stephanie Marshall, Head of the BBC in the West and South West of England, said: “Bristol’s media industry has gone from strength to strength and is now the biggest production hub in the south outside of London.

“TV holds up a mirror to our society and is a powerful way to spread positive messages. But before a single frame ends up on our televisions and phones, it has already provided hundreds of people with work.”
