How will Barcelona line up vs Villarreal? Ousmane Dembele returns, Lionel Messi could make first start of the season

Lionel Messi is in line for his first start of the season and Ousmane Dembele is back from injury to boost the attacking options for under-fire coach Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde on Tuesday night.

Messi has recovered from a calf injury sustained in pre-season and came off the bench in the second half of Barca's 0-0 draw at Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last Tuesday.

The Argentine attacker, who won FIFA's The Best award on Monday, also played the second half of the Catalans' 2-0 defeat at Granada on Saturday, but has yet to appear in the starting XI this term.

That looks set to change on Tuesday as Barca host Villarreal in the sixth round of La Liga, with the club captain expected to make his first start of the season in the Camp Nou clash.

Dembele is back from a hamstring injury, but he will start on the bench. The Frenchman's return means there is no place in the squad for youngster Carles Perez, who has featured in recent games, but Valverde said the La Masia graduate would remain with the first team.

Midfielder Ivan Rakitic has been left off the list for Villarreal as Carles Alena returns to a squad in La Liga for the first time since the opening game of the season, when he started at Athletic Club but was substituted at the break and then frozen out by Valverde.

Jordi Alba is still out injured, so Junior Firpo is likely to start at left-back. Centre-back Samuel Umtiti is also sidelined.

Possible Barcelona XI: Ter Stegen; Semedo, Pique, Lenglet, Junior; Busquets, De Jong, Arthur; Messi, Suarez, Griezmann
