How Whitley Bay Marie Curie nurse raised thousands of pounds for charity from her garden

A Marie Curie nurse has helped to raise almost £2,500 for charity by running a marathon around her garden.

Catherine Graham carried out the run at her Whitley Bay home over the weekend, covering 26.2 miles in laps around her lawn.

The 33-year-old, a Wallsend Harrier club member, organised her ‘Weekend Garden Marathon Challenge’ in aid of the Marie Curie Daffodil Appeal.

And she managed to raise around £2,500 through a fundraising page, way beyond her initial target of £300.

The mum-of-two, who has worked at the Marie Curie Elswick hospice in Newcastle for three years, said: “Despite a few challenges, I had a great weekend. I am so proud to have raised so much money for Marie Curie and have been extremely touched by people’s kindness.

"I am a very proud Marie Curie nurse and it’s a privilege to help patients and their families through what must be the darkest of times. To be able to ease someone’s pain and ensure that they have dignity and quality care in their final days is the most rewarding and absolutely necessary job.

"The nation has found itself in a time of a national emergency and Marie Curie is needed now more than ever. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated and supported my garden marathon."

Catherine ran her first Great North Run last year but this was her first marathon.

She decided to carry out the challenge as Marie Curie’s main fundraiser, The Great Daffodil Appeal, was cut short due to the spread of the coronavirus.

The charity provides care and support for people living with any terminal illness across the UK. Nurses work night and day in people’s homes and in hospices offering specialist care.

They also support people emotionally, provide practical information, and match them with trained volunteers.
