How Wetherspoons will look when it reopens after lockdown measures are eased

Pubs are due to reopen on July 4 after months of lockdown - and Wetherspoons has revealed how its premises will look when customers return.

As the company prepares to open many of its sites, it is also preparing to make some major changes that are likely to last for some time, the Mirror reports.

Plastic screens have been installed between tables at a branch in Muswell Hill, London.

They aim to protect customers and staff from Covid-19, while allowing the business to restart with confidence.

The glass separators have been installed also between chairs located next to each other as well as sofas, to ensure customers are not at risk.

Other branches set to reopen when the government gives the go-ahead are planning to have a smaller menu.

All the pubs will have staff members that regularly clean surfaces throughout the building.

The company will provide all staff with gloves, masks and protective eyewear but it will be up to employees if they choose to wear them.

Other changes include installing hand sanitisers around each pub, including at the entrance for customers and staff to use.

Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin has welcomed the Government's plan to allow pubs to reopen.

He said: "We are extremely pleased that pubs are reopening on July 4 after a long hiatus.

"We are going to discuss the precise Government proposals with our pub managers and staff before we comment further on the details."

It comes as the Government announced pubs, hotels and restaurant can reopen from Saturday, July 4, provided they follow guidelines on social distancing and sanitising.

Boris Johnson has encouraged people to "do their patriotic best for Britain" and head to the pubs when they reopen on July 4.

Tory MP Gareth Johnson said: "Going to the pub is a great British institution and vital if we want to get our economy back on track.

"Would the Prime Minister therefore join me in calling on people from July 4 to do their patriotic best for Britain and go to the pub?"

Mr Johnson replied: "Yes, I do encourage to take advantage of the freedoms that they are rightly reacquiring, but I must stress that people should act in a responsible way.

"And I know that that is where the public are. I know that is what people want to see."
