How under-fire David De Gea compares to his top six rivals ahead of Man United vs Chelsea clash

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is enduring the worst season among his rivals in top six sides, according to statistics.

As Manchester United sit in sixth, fighting to save their season, research from  Grosvenorsport.com  reveals the Red Devils' number one also sits bottom of the top six goalkeepers.

De Gea has conceded 44 goals in this campaign, the most of all the other top-six goalkeepers, while also only managing seven clean sheets this term. Only Arsenal’s Bernd Leno has kept fewer clean sheets (six) from the rest of the top-six, and he has played eight games fewer than United’s man in the sticks.

While De Gea has made the most saves of any goalkeeper in the top-six (109), he has also made two errors this season leading to goals, while also conceding the most goals from shots outside the box of any Premier League keeper this season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sets out stance on David De Gea ahead of Man United's clash with Chelsea

The 28-year old’s figures this season are a stark contrast to previous years. De Gea kept 18 clean sheets last year, while also conceding fewer than half of the goals he has in this campaign.

Brazilian Alisson Becker tops the goalkeeping list this season so far – the Liverpool keeper has only conceded 20 goals and kept 18 clean sheets in the process. His compatriot Ederson has 16 clean sheets to his name, while letting in just 22 goals.

Steve Munns, head of sport at  Grosvenorsport.com , said: “David de Gea has been a fantastic servant to Manchester United, but the Spaniard has endured his worst season in a Red Devils jersey by conceding 44 goals and only keeping seven clean sheets in the Premier League.

“This has contributed to United sitting sixth in the table at the moment, which is where De Gea also ranks in the list of top six goalkeepers on current form. Brazilians Alisson and Ederson, in comparison, have conceded fewer than De Gea combined.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has strong message for his players as Man United face pivotal Chelsea test

“Man United fans will be hoping that he can recover last season’s form, starting against Chelsea on Sunday, as the Red Devils desperately seek to make it into the top-four and secure Champions League qualification for next season.”

United face Chelsea at Old Trafford this afternoon in a crucial match in the battle to finish in the top four.
