How Unai Emery and Arsenal have given Liverpool a helping hand in the Premier League title race

Jurgen Klopp believes Unai Emery and Arsenal handed Liverpool a test they needed last weekend.

The Reds missed out on the Premier League title by just one point last season, in one of the most keenly-contested title races the Premier League has even seen.

They amassed their biggest-ever haul of 97 points and it still was not enough to take home the crown as Manchester City pipped them to it.

Liverpool are gunning to go one better this time around and have started like a house on fire, winning all of their opening three games.

No other side in the top flight has a 100% record, putting Liverpool out in front in the early stages of the campaign.

Klopp's side beat Arsenal last weekend, who were the only other side to have had a 100% record from their first two games, with the Reds picking the Gunners apart in a 3-1 victory.

Unai Emery: Arsenal showed 'character' against Liverpool

But Emery did something that Klopp was not expecting, and something that has helped them in their quest for the Premier League title.

Emery employed a diamond in midfield, with Granit Xhaka at the base, Joe Willock and Matteo Guendouzi either side and Dani Ceballos in front, with Nicolas Pepe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as a front two.

And Klopp knows his team will have to adapt to different tactics if they are to take the crown this year.

Speaking during his press conference ahead of the game with Burnley, he said: "That happens a lot [Arsenal changing their tactics]. Maybe Burnley will do it differently again. It’s not bad but it makes analysing a bit more difficult.

"We have the sessions where we prepare for the next opponents. Arsenal, I said after the game, we saw seven games in pre-season and never played a diamond once. The players adapted well to that."
