How ULIP plans can help you with legacy planning

Building wealth takes years. Sometimes, decades. But passing it on smoothly to the next generation needs its own planning. That is where legacy planning comes in.

For many Indian families, wealth is spread across different places. A home, some gold, bank deposits, mutual funds, retirement savings, insurance policies, maybe even a family business. These assets may look organised while the main earner is around. Later, the picture can become less simple. Who gets what? Will the family have enough ready money? Will investments need to be sold in a hurry?

Legacy planning tries to reduce that confusion. It helps ensure that wealth is protected, transferred, and used in the way the family intended.

What is legacy planning

Legacy planning is the process of arranging your assets, insurance, nominations, investments and succession plans so that your family is financially supported in the future.

It is not only for very wealthy families. Even a middle-income family may need it if there are dependents, property, loans, long-term investments or children’s goals involved.

A basic legacy plan may include a will, updated nominee details, proper asset records, adequate life cover and a plan for liquidity. The last point is important. Families often own valuable assets, but not all assets can be converted into cash quickly. A flat cannot be partly sold to pay an urgent bill. A business may not have free cash at the exact moment the family needs it.

This is where life insurance, and in some cases unit-linked insurance plan (ULIPs), can support the larger plan.

How can a ULIP help in legacy planning

A Unit Linked Insurance Plan combines life insurance with market-linked investment. Part of the premium goes towards life cover, while the investment portion is allocated to funds chosen by the policyholder.

For legacy planning, this combination can be useful. The life cover gives the family a protection layer. The market-linked fund value may help build a long-term corpus. Over time, this corpus can support retirement needs, children’s goals or future wealth transfer.

But it should be understood correctly. A ULIP is not a guaranteed-return product unless a specific benefit is clearly defined as guaranteed under the policy. The investment value depends on market performance. Investment risk in the portfolio is borne by the policyholder and that ULIPs do not provide liquidity during the first five years.

That means a ULIP works better when used patiently. Not for quick exits. Not for emergency money. More like a long-term financial bucket that sits inside a wider family plan.

Why life cover matters in wealth transfer

One mistake families sometimes make is assuming that assets alone are enough. Assets help, of course. But if the earning member passes away unexpectedly, the family may need money before property papers, business ownership, or investment accounts are settled.

Life cover can provide that breathing space. Under Bajaj Life Supreme, if the life assured passes away during the policy term, the death benefit is the higher of the prevailing sum assured, the fund value available on the date of intimation of death, or 105% of total premiums paid, subject to policy terms and conditions.

For a family, this can help protect immediate financial security. Daily expenses can continue. Children’s education plans may remain on track. Long-term investments may not have to be sold at an unsuitable time. That matters because legacy planning is not only about transferring money. It is also about avoiding panic.

Creating a long-term corpus through market-linked growth

Legacy planning also has a growth side. Many people do not want to leave only what they already have. They want their money to participate in long-term wealth creation.

ULIPs allow policyholders to invest in market-linked funds. Bajaj Life Supreme offers multiple fund options and fund switching, allowing the policyholder to align the investment with changing goals and risk appetite.

This flexibility can be useful across life stages. A younger investor may prefer higher equity exposure. Later, as retirement or succession needs come closer, the family may want a more balanced approach. The point is not to keep switching endlessly. It is to have room to adjust when life changes.

Liquidity after the lock-in period

Legacy planning often needs liquidity. Not always a huge amount, but enough to prevent distress decisions.

Bajaj Life Supreme offers systematic partial withdrawals after the five-year lock-in period, which can help create a regular income stream. The maturity benefit can also be received as a lump sum or through systematic payout for up to five years under the settlement option.

This may help retirees, pre-retirees, or families planning future cash flows. It can also support situations where the policyholder does not want to liquidate other long-term assets immediately.

Still, the first five years need discipline. Since ULIPs do not offer liquidity during this period, families should keep a separate emergency fund.

How Bajaj Life Supreme may fit in

Bajaj Life Supreme is positioned as a ULIP that helps individuals create a legacy through market-linked returns. It offers life cover, market-linked fund options, additions to the fund and withdrawal flexibility after the lock-in period.

The plan also has a whole life option. The policy term can be 15, 20, 25, 30, 40 years, or whole life, depending on the chosen option and eligibility. For someone thinking beyond one financial goal, this can be useful. Legacy planning is usually a long game.

Some features also reward long-term continuation. The Guaranteed Wealth Booster adds back eligible premium allocation charges at the end of the 15th policy year, accumulated at 7% per annum, subject to conditions. Loyalty Additions begin from the 16th policy year and are linked to the average fund value of the previous three years.

These features may help the fund value over time, provided the policy remains in force and the policyholder stays invested as per the terms.

A ULIP can support legacy planning by combining protection, long-term investment, and future liquidity. It can help a family build a market-linked corpus while keeping life cover in place.

Bajaj Life Supreme may fit this need for individuals who want to create wealth over the long term, protect their family, and keep options open for future income or wealth transfer. It should still be part of a larger plan. A will, updated nominations, emergency savings, and clear family communication remain important.

A good legacy is not only about how much money is left behind. It is also about how smoothly that money reaches the people it was meant for.
