How Tottenham can profit from Timo's Werner £53m Chelsea transfer

Darren Bent believes Chelsea's deal in principle to sign Timo Werner will invariably lead to Tottenham being able to snap up cheap deals.

The Blues are moving nearer to signing the German after pushing ahead of Liverpool in the queue to sign one of the most highly-coveted young forwards in world football.

Sources have told football.london that there is now a "high probability" that Frank Lampard’s side will activate the striker's €55million release clause before it expires on June 15.

While Bild reported last week that a deal is done and that Werner will sign a five-year deal.

However, football.london has been told that there have been positive negotiations but outstanding details must still be agreed.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with the RB Leipzig striker in recent months, who is believed to have a £52m release clause in his contract which is set to expire in June.

However, the ECHO recently revealed that the Reds have not held talks with RB regarding any deal for Werner in the upcoming transfer window.

Tottenham and Manchester United were also mooted as possible destinations for the German.

And Bent believes that due to the financial losses clubs are expected to make as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, clubs like Tottenham could benefit this summer.

“Everyone’s going to be thinking about transfers but when you look that Chelsea have been able to nip in and get Werner for around £50million, I do think this whole pandemic and period is going to bring transfers back down to earth," he told Football Insider.

“I think we were seeing way too high a price paid for players that quite frankly weren’t worth it for that amount of money.

“They will have their eye on transfer targets and signings they want to make but I think they’ll have more chance now of actually making these transfers happen, rather than someone quoting you an absolutely stupid price that you’re never going to pay.

“I think everyone in this period has been forced to look at things more logically and more open-minded within the fact that there’s not going to be the amount of money spent as in previous seasons.”
