Last weekend wasn’t how Washington State or Utah imagined it. Both teams took unexpected losses in their Pac-12 openers. Now, each team will look to avenge those losses when the Cougars travel to play the No. 19 Utes. Last season, WSU got a 28-24 win over Utah.

Washington State looked well on its way to another win this season. The team was up 35-17, at halftime vs. UCLA, who was 0-3 on the season and had very little to be excited about. Unfortunately, UCLA had other plans. The Bruins scored 50 points in the second half to hand the Cougars their first loss of the season in a 67-63 defeat. Even in the loss, Cougars quarterback Anthony Gordon was unbelievable, going 41-for-61 with 570 yards and nine touchdowns. Running back Max Borghi ran for 123 yards on 15 carries. It was ultimately the defense that couldn’t get a stop when it counted the most.
Meanwhile, Utah was stunned at home, 30-23, last Friday by USC. Coming into the season, many talking heads thought Utah had a chance to make the College Football Playoff. Part of what made the loss so surprising was because of USC’s starting quarterback. Due to injuries, USC started Matt Fink, the team’s third-string quarterback. Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley went 22-for-30 with 210 yards and one touchdown, but was noticeably limping late in the contest with an apparent foot injury. He’s yet to be ruled out for the game.
