Villanova’s performance in non-conference play has inspired confidence ahead of the Big East season, thanks primarily to the team’s win over the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks in December. That 56-55 win saw Villanova hold the Jayhawks to 43 percent shooting for the game, slowing the No. 1 team in the nation down enough to be beaten by a late three-pointer by Jermaine Samuels. In conference play, bearing down on defense the way Villanova played against Kansas will take Jay Wright’s team a long way.
The theme of the season for this Villanova team has been balanced. Heading into the conference schedule, Villanova has five players averaging double figures. The leading scorer for this team is Colin Gillespie, but Saddiq Bey, Justin Moore, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and the aforementioned Samuels are all double-figure scorers for a team that has no problem sharing the basketball. With several players that can beat teams at any given time, it is no surprise that Villanova put together one of the best non-conference seasons in the Big East.
