The international window continues on Tuesday with a matchup of North and South American sides. The United States looks to figure things out in a new era under manager Gregg Berhalter. They’ll host Uruguay in St. Louis to round out their two-match stretch. Can the Americans right the ship after another embarrassing loss to their biggest rivals or will the bad form continue?

Berhalter was adamant after a 3-0 loss to Mexico that despite the poor results, the overall plan is working and things are improving in the grand scheme of things. The idea of playing possession based soccer and playing it out off the back instead of a direct style is something that the former U.S. international is married to. He seems completely focused on this style of play taking hold, even if it means getting run off the field tactically and performance wise.
The lopsided scoreline against El Tri was one thing, but the absolute domination when it came to pressing the U.S. and disrupting any and all flow of possession was eye-opening. This is another opportunity for the new style to get a look against a very good opposition. While it seems unlikely that the ideas will change, the personnel asked to implement them for sure will. Christian Pulisic is among several European based players who have left camp early to return to their club teams. This should give players like Paxton Pomykal and Jackson Yueill a chance to show the manager what they have to offer.
Uruguay comes after defeating another top Concacaf side in Costa Rica. Jonathan Rodriguez’s 90th minute goal was enough to earn La Celeste the 2-1 victory. They are without a few of their top stars like Luis Suarez, but will undoubtedly give the U.S. a very tough match.
