Domenec Torrent’s side was the class of the East during the regular season, amassing 64 points, good enough to top Atlanta United by six points. A revamped roster led to vastly improved results this season. The team brought in some free faces like Heber and Alexandru Mitriță to bolster the attack. Those moves would prove to be key as NYCFC led the East in goals scored with 63 and goal differential. Earning the top seed doesn’t always guarantee playoff success, but it does put a team in the best position. However, their home-field advantage has been compromised with them having to move from Yankee Stadium to Citi Field due to playing conditions.
Toronto FC has already seen its playoff lives flash before its eyes after being taken to extra time by D.C. United in the first round. A four-goal barrage in the 30-minute period was enough to stave off elimination. Toronto was able to overcome the absence of Jozy Altidore for at least one match. The team’s hope of pulling off the upset and advancing to the conference finals could hinge on the U.S. international’s health. If he returns, he could make the difference. If he remains out, it could be a rough day for TFC. Michael Bradley’s lack of mobility could also be a huge factor going up against the likes of Maxi Moralez and Mitriță. Toronto may have the playoff experience on its side, but it’s clear that NYCFC has the edge in talent.
